A lipoma is a slow-growing lump made of fat cells that sits just beneath the skin. It is not cancer, and it does not turn into cancer in the vast majority of cases. If you press it, it usually feels soft and doughy, and it tends to slip about under your fingers. Most are painless.
Lipomas can appear almost anywhere there is fat. The neck, shoulders, back, upper arms, abdomen, and thighs are the most common places. They can be small, like a pea, or grow to the size of a lime or larger over months or years. Some people have just one, and others have several.
They are very common and usually harmless. Many people live with one for years without any trouble. For others, it becomes bothersome because of its size, its position, such as where a bag strap or collar rubs, or because they simply do not like how it looks.
The important point is that not every lump under the skin is a lipoma. Cysts, swollen lymph nodes, hernias, and, rarely, more serious growths can feel similar. A lump that is changing, painful, or hard should always be looked at by a doctor, which is why it is worth getting any new lump checked rather than guessing.
Lipoma can look and feel different for each person. If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting checked.
The exact cause of lipomas is not fully understood. Several factors seem to play a part.
Lipomas often run in families. Some people inherit a tendency to develop many of them.
They are most commonly found in adults between roughly 40 and 60, though they can appear at other ages.
Some people notice a lipoma appearing at a site of earlier injury, though this link is not firmly proven.
Some rare inherited conditions are associated with multiple lipomas. Your doctor may ask about family history and other symptoms.
Lipomas can occur in people of any body weight, and losing weight does not usually make them go away. Diet and lifestyle are not known to cause them.
A sebaceous cyst, a swollen lymph node, a hernia, a nerve-related growth, or, rarely, a fatty tumour called liposarcoma can feel similar to a lipoma. This is why a proper examination matters, and why a lump with warning features should not be assumed to be harmless.
It starts with a conversation. Your doctor will ask when you first noticed the lump, whether it has changed in size, whether it hurts, whether there are other lumps, and whether anyone in your family has similar lumps. Your general health and any other symptoms matter too.
The doctor will then examine the lump, noting its size, how soft or firm it feels, whether it moves, what the skin looks like, and whether it is tender. In many cases, an experienced doctor can recognise a typical lipoma from the examination alone.
Depending on what is found, your doctor may suggest further tests, such as:
Which is quick and helps show whether the lump is fatty, fluid-filled, or something else
For larger or deeper lumps, or when there is any doubt about the diagnosis
If the lump has worrying features or the diagnosis is unclear
Under a microscope after surgery, which is commonly done to confirm the diagnosis
Not everyone needs every test, and many people need only an examination. Your doctor will explain which ones are useful for you, and why.
It is tempting to assume a soft, painless lump is nothing, and in most cases that assumption turns out to be right. But being sure is better than being hopeful, and a quick check can settle the question.
Many lumps feel alike. A doctor can tell a lipoma from a cyst or other swelling, often just by examining it.
Hard, fast-growing, deep, or painful lumps need further tests.
Most lipomas do not need to be removed. Knowing that can save you worry.
If you do want it removed, you can understand the options, what to expect, and what the scar and recovery may involve.
Creams, oils, and herbal pastes sold as lipoma "dissolvers" have no reliable evidence behind them, and some can irritate or burn the skin.
If a lump needs treatment, earlier assessment makes things simpler.
A typical lipoma is not dangerous. But certain features mean a lump should be examined without delay, because it may be something other than a simple lipoma.
See a doctor promptly if a lump is red, hot, swollen, and painful, or if there is any discharge, since this can suggest infection. If you feel very unwell, or have a fever with a rapidly changing lump, seek medical help the same day.
What we can promise is how we approach every visit. We listen first, we explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and we only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions, and your consultation will be private.
We explain what the lump is likely to be, and what it is not, without heavy medical jargon.
The size and position of the lump, your health, and your preferences all shape the plan.
If the lump does not need treatment, we will tell you so. If you want it removed, we will explain what is involved, including scarring and the chance of recurrence.
If the lump changes, or if there are concerns after a procedure, you can come back and the plan can be reviewed.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
What we think is happening, in words you can follow.
We suggest tests and treatments only when they are useful for you.
If you have noticed a lump under your skin, a short consultation can give you clarity. We will examine it, explain what it is likely to be, and help you decide whether anything needs to be done, at a pace that suits you.

Care planned around your concern, at a pace that suits you.
Because a lipoma is harmless, treatment depends mainly on whether it bothers you, rather than on the lump itself. A plan may include some of the following.
It is worth knowing that any surgery carries some risks, such as a scar, bruising, infection, or a collection of fluid. Lipomas can occasionally come back, or new ones can appear elsewhere. Results differ from person to person, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
Please avoid squeezing, cutting, or attempting to remove a lump at home, and avoid applying herbal pastes or unproven remedies. These can lead to infection, scarring, and delay in a correct diagnosis.
If the lump is small, painless, and typical, leaving it alone is perfectly reasonable. Your doctor may ask you to note any changes in size or feel and come back if they occur.
This is the most reliable way to remove a lipoma. It is often done as a short day-care procedure under local anaesthesia, through a small cut over the lump. The removed tissue is usually sent for examination to confirm what it was. Larger or deeper lipomas may need a different approach, and your surgeon will explain this.
In some cases, a lipoma may be removed using a liposuction technique through a smaller cut. It may leave a smaller scar, but it is not suitable for every lipoma, and some may return because pieces of the capsule are left behind.
These are sometimes used for small lipomas and can shrink them in some cases, but they do not always work, and they may leave a dent in the skin. Your doctor will tell you if this is a sensible option.
If the lump has warning features
To check wound healing and answer questions
No. A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of fat cells. Cancer arising from a typical lipoma is extremely rare. However, a different fatty tumour called liposarcoma can look similar, which is why lumps that are growing quickly, hard, deep, or painful should be examined.
Not usually. Many lipomas are small and painless and can simply be left alone. Removal is often considered when a lipoma is growing, causing discomfort, interfering with movement or clothing, or bothering you cosmetically. Your doctor will help you decide.
Lipomas do not generally disappear by themselves. They tend to stay the same size or grow slowly over time. Weight loss does not usually remove them.
There is no reliable evidence that creams, oils, or herbal applications dissolve lipomas. Some can irritate or damage the skin. It is best to speak to a doctor about options that are known to work.
Small lipomas are usually removed under local anaesthesia, so the area is numbed and you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness afterwards is common and is managed with medicines. Larger or deeper lipomas may need different anaesthesia, and your surgeon will explain this.
Any cut leaves a scar. Its size depends on the size of the lipoma and the technique used. Your surgeon can talk through placement and what to expect before you decide.
It can, particularly if some of the lipoma’s capsule is left behind, or if you tend to develop lipomas. New lipomas can also form elsewhere. Your doctor will explain the chances in your situation.
See a doctor promptly if a lump is growing quickly, has become hard or fixed, is painful, or is larger than about 5 cm. Seek help the same day if the lump is red, hot, and tender, or if there is a fever or discharge, since this may suggest infection.
