“Joint pain” is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom, and a very common one. A joint is any place where two bones meet, such as the knees, hips, shoulders, fingers, wrists, ankles, or spine, and every one of them can hurt for different reasons.
For some people, joint pain comes from the cartilage that cushions the joint wearing down over time. For others it comes from inflammation, where the body’s own defence system irritates the joint lining, as in rheumatoid arthritis. It can also come from a build-up of uric acid crystals, as in gout, from an injury or overuse, from an infection, or even as a lingering effect after a viral illness such as chikungunya.
Because the causes are so different, the treatments differ too. A painkiller that eases a worn knee will not stop an inflammatory arthritis from damaging the joints. That is why pain that keeps coming back, affects several joints, or comes with swelling, stiffness, or tiredness is worth looking into early, instead of just coping with it.
How a doctor reads joint pain also depends on your age, which joints are involved, how long it lasts, and what else is happening in your body. There is no single fixed rule for when it becomes a concern, which is why an examination matters.
Joint problems can show up in different ways. You might notice:
A few patterns are helpful to your doctor. Pain that is worse with activity and eases with rest often points to wear and tear. Stiffness that lasts for more than about half an hour in the morning and improves with movement can suggest inflammation. Sudden, intense pain with swelling in a single joint, such as the big toe, can suggest gout.
The cause of joint pain cannot be worked out from symptoms alone. These are the main groups doctors consider.
More than one cause can exist together, which is another reason a proper assessment helps.
The most common form of joint pain, caused by gradual wear of the cartilage. It often affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine, and is more common with age, excess weight, and past injuries.
An autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints. It often affects small joints on both sides of the body, such as the fingers and wrists, and causes prolonged morning stiffness and swelling. Early treatment matters in this condition.
A build-up of uric acid can form crystals in a joint, causing sudden, severe pain and swelling, often in the big toe, ankle, or knee.
Psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and lupus can also cause joint pain, sometimes with skin, back, eye, or other symptoms.
A joint can become infected directly, which is urgent. Joint pain can also follow viral infections such as chikungunya, and sometimes lingers for weeks or months afterwards.
Sprains, ligament or cartilage injuries, and repetitive strain can lead to pain, and in some cases to long-term problems.
Low vitamin D, and conditions that weaken the bones, may contribute to aches and pains in the joints and bones.
Underactive thyroid, diabetes, and some other conditions can be linked to joint pain or stiffness.
A few medicines can cause joint or muscle aches as a side effect. Please do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. Speak to your doctor first.
Conditions such as fibromyalgia can cause pain in many parts of the body with tiredness and poor sleep, though the joints themselves appear normal.
It starts with a conversation. Your doctor will ask which joints hurt, when the pain began, how it behaves through the day, how long morning stiffness lasts, whether there has been swelling, fever, rash, or any recent illness or injury, and how it affects your daily life. Your medicines, family history, diet, and work habits all help.
The doctor will then examine your joints, looking for swelling, tenderness, warmth, range of movement, and deformity, and will often check other parts of the body too, such as the skin, eyes, and spine.
Depending on what is found, your doctor may suggest further tests, such as:
Such as a complete blood count, ESR, and CRP, to look for inflammation
Such as rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP, or ANA, when an autoimmune condition is suspected
When gout is a possibility
When relevant
To look at the joint structures
In selected cases, such as a suspected infection or gout
Not everyone needs every test, and some results need to be read together with your symptoms. Your doctor will explain which ones are useful for you, and why.
When joints hurt, most people reach for a painkiller, a balm, or a home remedy, and carry on. For a minor strain, that may be fine. But when pain returns again and again, or affects several joints, treating only the pain can let the real problem continue quietly in the background.
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout each need different treatment.
Some types can damage the joints permanently if they are not treated in good time.
Rest suits some conditions but can make others stiffer. Some exercises help one condition and aggravate another.
Joint infections and certain autoimmune conditions need prompt care.
Regular long-term use of painkillers can affect the stomach, kidneys, and blood pressure.
You learn what to do, what to avoid, and what to watch for.
Most joint pain is not an emergency. But go to the nearest emergency department or see a doctor the same day if you have any of the following:
What we can promise is how we approach every visit. We listen first, we explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and we only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
We explain what your reports and scans show, and what they do not, without heavy medical jargon.
Your age, work, daily routine, other health conditions, and goals all shape the plan.
Some joint conditions settle and others need long-term care. We will tell you plainly which is likely in your situation.
If pain continues or changes, you can come back and the plan can be reviewed.
If your joints have been bothering you for a while, a conversation with the right doctor can give you clarity. We will look at your symptoms and reports, explain what they mean, and help you plan the next steps, at a pace that suits you.

Care planned around your daily life, at a pace that suits you.
Treatment depends entirely on the cause, how severe the problem is, and your age and overall health. A plan may include some of the following.
Please avoid taking painkillers regularly for long periods, or starting steroid tablets, on your own. Both can cause harm when used without proper guidance.
Some joint conditions are long-term. The aim of treatment is to relieve pain, protect the joints, and help you stay active. Responses differ from person to person, and results cannot be guaranteed.
Using medicines chosen carefully for you, along with measures such as heat or cold application. Some pain medicines are not suitable for people with stomach, kidney, or heart conditions.
Such as medicines that control the immune system in rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions, or medicines to treat attacks of gout and to lower uric acid over the long term
When present, as decided by your doctor
To keep joints moving, strengthen supporting muscles, and protect the joints
Where relevant, to reduce the load on weight-bearing joints
Which may include advice on foods that affect uric acid in gout, and on staying active
Such as braces or walking aids, when helpful
In selected cases, after discussing the potential benefits and limits
When needed. This is usually considered when significant joint damage has occurred and other treatment has not given enough relief. Your doctor will explain the options so you can make an informed decision.
Because many joint conditions need regular review and adjustment
Morning stiffness and pain are common in several conditions. Short stiffness that eases within minutes is often seen in wear-and-tear arthritis. Stiffness that lasts longer than about half an hour and improves with movement can point toward an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis. A doctor can help tell them apart.
Joint problems become more common with age, but pain is not something you simply have to accept. There are many ways to ease pain and keep moving, and getting it checked helps find out what suits you. Joint pain in younger people deserves particular attention, since it is more likely to have an inflammatory cause.
Some people continue to have joint pain and stiffness for weeks or even months after chikungunya or other viral infections. It often improves gradually, but it should be assessed to make sure nothing else is going on and to help manage symptoms.
This depends on your symptoms. Many people need only an examination and an X-ray. Blood tests for inflammation, uric acid, or autoimmune markers, and other scans, are used when the situation calls for them. There is no single test that fits everyone.
Some causes, such as a minor injury or an infection, can be treated and settle completely. Others, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, are long-term conditions that can usually be managed well with the right treatment. Your doctor will give you a realistic picture after assessing you.
Occasional use under your doctor’s guidance is generally fine. Taking anti-inflammatory painkillers regularly for a long time can affect the stomach, kidneys, and blood pressure. Ask your doctor what is safe for you, and for how long.
It depends on the cause. During a flare with a hot, swollen joint, rest may be needed for a short while. For most long-term joint conditions, gentle regular movement and strengthening exercises help more than prolonged rest. Your doctor or physiotherapist can advise what is right for you.
Go straight away if a joint is suddenly hot, red, swollen, and very painful, especially with fever; if you cannot move a joint or bear weight after an injury; if you have joint pain with a high fever and a new rash; or if joint pain comes with chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, or severe weakness.
