In everyday conversation, “gastric” covers almost any discomfort in the upper tummy: burning, gas, heaviness after meals, sour taste in the mouth, a feeling of fullness that will not go away. People say “I have gas” or “my acidity is back” and move on with their day.
Behind those words, doctors think about a few different things. The stomach lining may be inflamed, which is called gastritis. Acid may be flowing back up into the food pipe, which is called acid reflux, or GERD when it happens often. There may be a sore in the stomach or the first part of the intestine, called a peptic ulcer. Or the digestion itself may be sluggish or oversensitive without any visible damage, which is often called functional dyspepsia.
These can feel remarkably alike, but they are not treated the same way. And the habit of taking an antacid or a pill from the medical shop each time can cover up a problem that needs proper attention. The good news is that most gastric problems can be understood and managed well once the cause is clear.
People with gastric problems describe it in different ways. You might notice:
Symptoms often shift with meal timing, stress, certain foods, or lying down soon after eating. Keeping a note of when they appear can help your doctor a great deal.
It is not possible to tell what is behind gastric symptoms from the symptoms alone. These are the main possibilities doctors consider.
Inflammation of the stomach lining. It can be triggered by infection, certain medicines, alcohol, or other irritants.
A common bacterial infection of the stomach. In many people it causes no trouble, but in others it can lead to gastritis and ulcers. It is treatable with the right combination of medicines.
Regular use of painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or diclofenac can irritate the stomach lining and lead to gastritis or ulcers, especially when taken often or on an empty stomach.
The muscle at the lower end of the food pipe does not close well, allowing acid to rise. Large meals, lying down soon after eating, being overweight, pregnancy, and smoking can all contribute.
Open sores in the lining of the stomach or the upper intestine, most often related to H. pylori or pain medicines.
Alcohol, smoking, long gaps between meals, late-night eating, and heavy, oily food can set off or worsen symptoms. Stress does not cause ulcers on its own, but it can make symptoms feel stronger.
Persistent stomach discomfort without any visible damage on tests. It is common and real, and it responds to management.
Gallbladder stones, pancreatic problems, liver conditions, and sometimes heart problems can all produce upper abdominal or chest discomfort. That is one more reason a proper examination matters.
It begins with a conversation. Your doctor will ask when the symptoms started, how they relate to food, sleep, and stress, which medicines you take, whether you smoke or drink, and whether there is any family history of stomach or bowel problems. Pain medicines and herbal or over-the-counter products are worth mentioning, even if you do not think they matter.
The doctor will then examine your abdomen and check for signs such as pallor or tenderness.
Depending on your symptoms, age, and warning signs, your doctor may suggest further tests, such as:
Including a haemoglobin check for anaemia
Through a stool test, a breath test, or a sample taken during endoscopy
In which a thin flexible camera is used to look directly at the food pipe, stomach, and the first part of the intestine, and sometimes to take a small tissue sample
If the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas needs to be checked
Not everyone needs an endoscopy. Your doctor will explain which tests are useful for you, and why.
When the stomach burns, the quickest fix seems to be an antacid, a sachet, or a tablet that a friend swears by. These can bring short-term relief, and there is nothing wrong with that for an occasional episode. But when symptoms come back again and again, treating each flare in isolation tends to miss the bigger picture.
If H. pylori, a regular painkiller, or reflux is behind the problem, treating that cause is what stops the cycle.
Acid-reducing tablets are useful, but they are meant to be taken for a specific reason and a specific period. Using them for months without a diagnosis is not a plan.
Bleeding ulcers, and in rare cases stomach or food-pipe cancers, can show up as ordinary-seeming symptoms at first.
You learn what to take, what to avoid, how long to continue, and when to come back.
Most gastric symptoms are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. A few signs, however, should never be put off. See a doctor as soon as possible if you notice:
Go to the nearest emergency department immediately if you have sudden, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, black stools with dizziness or fainting, or chest pain with sweating or breathlessness. Chest burning can sometimes be a heart problem, and it should not be assumed to be acidity.
What we can promise is how we approach every visit. We listen first, we explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and we only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
We explain what is happening in your stomach and why, without heavy medical jargon.
Your age, work routine, eating habits, other health conditions, and current medicines all shape the plan.
Some gastric problems settle quickly and others need longer-term care, and we will tell you plainly which is likely in your situation.
If symptoms linger or return, you can come back and the plan can be reviewed.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
What we think is happening, in words you can follow.
We suggest tests and treatments only when they are useful for you.
Speak to a doctor who will listen, examine, and help you plan the next steps.

Care planned around your symptoms, at a pace that suits you.
Treatment depends on what is causing the symptoms and how severe they are. A plan may include some of the following.
Some gastric conditions, like reflux and functional dyspepsia, are long-term and can flare from time to time. The aim of treatment is to control symptoms, heal any damage, and reduce the chance of recurrence, and responses differ from person to person.
Such as antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors, chosen and timed according to your condition
If it is found. This usually involves a combination of medicines taken for a set number of days, and it is important to complete the full course.
That may be irritating the stomach, with your doctor's guidance
Such as smaller and regular meals, avoiding late-night eating, limiting alcohol and smoking, and identifying foods that trigger your symptoms
Such as not lying down straight after meals and raising the head end of the bed
To confirm that symptoms have settled, and to adjust or stop medicines when appropriate
Gastritis means inflammation of the stomach lining. Acidity or reflux means stomach acid rising into the food pipe. An ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the intestine. They can feel similar, but they have different causes and need different treatment, so a doctor’s assessment helps.
No. Many people can be assessed and treated based on their history and examination, with simple tests. Endoscopy is usually advised when there are warning signs, when symptoms are persistent or do not respond to treatment, or in older patients with new symptoms. Your doctor will explain why it is or is not needed.
Occasional use for a clear reason is generally fine. But taking acid-reducing medicines daily for a long time without medical advice is not recommended, since it can hide a condition that needs treatment, and long-term use has its own considerations. Ask your doctor how long you need them.
Stress does not usually cause ulcers on its own, but it can worsen symptoms such as burning, nausea, and discomfort in many people. Managing stress, sleep, and meal routines often helps alongside medical treatment.
This differs from person to person. Many people find that very spicy, oily, or acidic foods, large late meals, alcohol, and strong tea or coffee make symptoms worse. Rather than following a long list, it helps to notice your own triggers. Your doctor can guide you.
It depends on the cause. Some conditions settle within a few weeks of the right treatment, while others, like reflux or functional dyspepsia, may need longer management and can come back. Your doctor can give you a realistic idea after assessing you.
Common reasons include an untreated cause such as H. pylori, ongoing use of pain medicines, continuing triggers such as irregular meals, alcohol, or smoking, stopping medicines too early, or a long-term condition that flares from time to time. Working out which applies to you is a big part of the consultation.
Go straight away if you have sudden severe stomach pain, vomit blood, pass black stools with dizziness or fainting, or have chest pain with sweating or breathlessness. Do not assume severe chest discomfort is only acidity.
