The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage at the base of the palm. Through it runs the median nerve, which gives feeling to the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger. When the tunnel tightens or tissues inside swell, the nerve is squeezed. That is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
CTS is very common, more so in women, and often appears between 30 and 60. It is linked with repetitive hand work, pregnancy, diabetes, thyroid problems, and some types of arthritis.
“Pressure on a nerve is easiest to treat early. Mild CTS often settles with simple measures. If it is ignored for a long time, numbness and weakness may not fully recover.”
CTS can affect one hand or both. If any of these feel familiar, it may be time to get your hand checked.
Pins and needles in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.
Symptoms that wake you, often relieved by shaking the hand.
Numbness when driving, holding a phone, reading, or typing.
Aching or burning in the hand or wrist, sometimes up the forearm.
Clumsiness, a weak grip, or dropping objects.
In longer-standing cases, thinning at the base of the thumb.
Several factors can narrow the tunnel or swell the tissues inside. Some other nerve problems can cause similar tingling.
Typing, mouse or phone use, sewing, tailoring, or tool work.
Fluid retention swells the tunnel; it often settles after delivery.
Raises the risk of nerve compression.
Also linked with a higher risk.
Rheumatoid arthritis or past wrist fractures can narrow the tunnel.
Being overweight is a risk factor.
Some people have a naturally smaller tunnel.
A pinched neck nerve, elbow nerve compression, or B12 deficiency.

Long-standing pressure can damage the nerve, and numbness may not fully recover.
People with tingling or numb fingers, night-time hand numbness, a weak grip, or wrist pain can consult DR Care for a proper evaluation and clear options.
Typing and mouse use for long hours.
Sewing, cutting, and fine hand work.
Hands that go numb on the steering wheel.
Hand numbness during pregnancy.
Who are at higher risk of nerve compression.
Waking up to shake your hands.
Dropping things or clumsy hands.
Needing advice on splint versus surgery.
At night, the wrist often curls while sleeping, and fluid shifts can increase pressure in the tunnel. That is why symptoms are often worse then, and why a night splint can help.
Mild cases, especially those linked with pregnancy or a temporary strain, can settle. Others persist or worsen. If symptoms last, get them checked.
Not always. It is often diagnosed by examination. Nerve tests help confirm the diagnosis, judge severity, and rule out other causes, especially before surgery.
It helps many people with mild to moderate symptoms, but it may not work for everyone. If symptoms persist, other options are discussed.
Carpal tunnel release is a commonly performed procedure and often relieves symptoms. Like any surgery it has risks, and numbness or weakness may take time to recover, or may not fully recover if the nerve was badly damaged.
It is uncommon but can happen. Your surgeon will explain the chances in your case.
Yes. Both raise the risk, so your doctor may check them.
Go straight away if you have sudden one-sided weakness or numbness with a drooping face or trouble speaking, a hand that suddenly turns cold or pale, severe pain and swelling after an injury, or a hot, red, swollen hand with fever.
