Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis B and C are two different viruses that infect the liver and spread through blood or certain body fluids. Both can cause a short-term illness or a long-term infection that may lead to scarring (cirrhosis) and liver cancer.
Hepatitis B can be prevented with a safe vaccine, and treatment can keep the virus under control. Hepatitis C has no vaccine, but modern antiviral medicines can clear the virus in most people.
“Both infections are often silent, and many people discover them only through a routine blood test. A positive result is the start of a plan, not the end of the road.”
Many people with hepatitis B or C have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
Tiredness and weakness that does not go away.
Loss of appetite, nausea, or a feeling of fullness.
Discomfort or mild pain on the upper right side of the belly.
Tea-coloured urine, or pale, clay-coloured stools.
Yellowing of the eyes or skin, known as jaundice.
Itching, joint pain, or a low-grade fever in some people.
Both viruses spread through blood and certain body fluids. They do not spread through hugging, sharing food or utensils, coughing, or casual contact.
Hepatitis B can pass from mother to baby during birth.
With an infected partner, more often for hepatitis B.
Sharing needles or syringes, or unsafe injections.
Unsterilised medical, dental, or tattoo equipment.
Blood transfusions or transplants where screening was not done.
Personal items that may carry blood, like razors or toothbrushes.
Hugging, sharing food, coughing, or toilets do not spread it.
Alcohol, excess weight, and diabetes can worsen liver damage.
We confirm the diagnosis, check how much the liver is affected, and decide with you whether treatment is needed now.
Why you were tested, symptoms, past exposures, family history, alcohol, and medicines, without judgement.
Looking for yellowing of the eyes, an enlarged liver or spleen, or swelling of the belly.

We listen first, explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.

Only a blood test can tell. Both infections often cause no symptoms for years.
People who have tested positive, have abnormal liver reports, were exposed in the past, or are pregnant can consult DR Care confidentially.
Needing confirmation, monitoring, or treatment.
Wanting to know if the virus is active and treatable.
Liver tests that came back raised or flagged.
Partners and household members needing tests or vaccination.
Wanting screening and protection for the baby.
A needle-stick, unsafe injection, tattoo, or past transfusion.
At risk and not yet protected against hepatitis B.
Starting treatment that weakens immunity.
They are caused by two different viruses. Hepatitis B can be prevented with a vaccine and is usually controlled with medicines. Hepatitis C has no vaccine, but treatment can clear the virus in most people. Both can damage the liver over time if not managed, and both are detected with blood tests.
For hepatitis C, modern antiviral medicines can clear the virus in most people, and your doctor will confirm this with a blood test after treatment. For hepatitis B, treatment usually keeps the virus under control rather than removing it completely, though some people do clear it. Your doctor will explain what to expect in your situation.
Only a blood test can tell. Because both infections often have no symptoms, testing is advised for anyone who may have been exposed, those with abnormal liver tests, pregnant women, and people about to start immune-suppressing treatment.
Hepatitis B and C do not spread through hugging, sharing food or utensils, coughing, or casual contact. They spread through blood and certain body fluids. You should avoid sharing razors, toothbrushes, or anything that may carry blood. Family members and partners should be tested, and vaccinated against hepatitis B if they are not immune.
Yes, in most cases. If you have hepatitis B, steps such as vaccination of the baby soon after birth, and in some situations other measures, greatly reduce the chance of passing it on. Talk to your doctor early in pregnancy, or before planning one.
Not always. Some people with hepatitis B only need regular monitoring until tests show that treatment is needed. For hepatitis C, treatment is generally advised when there is an active infection. Your doctor will decide after your tests.
Alcohol speeds up liver damage in people with hepatitis, so it is best avoided. Please discuss this honestly with your doctor.
Go straight away if you vomit blood, pass black or bloody stools, become confused or very drowsy, develop yellowing of the eyes with severe weakness or vomiting, have a rapidly swelling belly with fever or severe pain, or have bleeding that will not stop.
