Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gut condition in which the bowel looks normal on tests but does not work normally. Doctors call it a disorder of gut-brain interaction. The gut may be oversensitive, and the bowel muscles may move too fast, too slowly, or unevenly.
The typical picture is recurring belly pain linked with bowel movements, with constipation, loose stools, or both. Bloating is common. Symptoms often flare with stress, certain foods, irregular meals, poor sleep, or after an infection.
“IBS does not damage the bowel and does not turn into bowel cancer. It is not just in your head, and it is not your fault. It is treatable with diet, lifestyle, and medicines.”
IBS symptoms tend to come and go. If these feel familiar, and you have no warning signs, a proper diagnosis can bring real relief.
Often relieved, or sometimes worsened, by passing stool.
A swollen belly, often worse by evening, with excess gas.
Hard stools, or a sense of incomplete emptying.
Watery stools, sometimes with a sudden urge to go.
Swinging between constipation and diarrhoea.
Symptoms worsening with stress, certain foods, or irregular routines.
The exact cause is not fully understood. Several factors seem to work together, and some other conditions can look similar.
The gut reacts strongly to normal stretching, and muscles move unevenly.
Stress, anxiety, and low mood can worsen symptoms, and vice versa.
Some people develop IBS after a stomach infection.
Fatty meals or certain fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs).
Irregular meals, poor sleep, and low activity.
Some women notice symptoms vary with their periods.
Coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, IBD, or thyroid problems.
A proper assessment checks these where needed.
We confirm IBS, rule out other causes, and match treatment to your type, whether constipation, diarrhoea, or mixed.
Pain, stool pattern, bloating, triggers, food, stress, sleep, and family history.
We examine your abdomen and check carefully for warning signs.
Blood, stool, or breath tests; colonoscopy only when warning signs call for it.
Diet, medicines, and mind-gut support, adjusted over time.
We listen first, explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
Gut symptoms are personal, and you will not be rushed.
What you have, and what you do not, without jargon.
Your food habits, work, and stress shape the plan.
Only the tests you need, not a long list.
IBS often needs adjustments over time, and we are here for them.

Blood in stool, weight loss, or night-time symptoms are not IBS. Get them checked.
People with recurring belly pain, bloating, constipation, loose stools, or symptoms that flare with stress or food can consult DR Care for a clear diagnosis and plan.
Cramps linked with bowel movements.
A swollen belly, often worse by evening.
Hard stools and straining.
Loose stools and urgency.
Swinging between the two.
Symptoms worse during stressful times.
Symptoms that never fully settled.
Avoiding more and more foods without a diagnosis.
No. IBS does not damage the bowel and does not lead to bowel cancer. But it can affect quality of life, and other conditions can look like it, so it should be properly diagnosed.
It is usually a long-term condition that comes and goes, but symptoms can be controlled well in many people with the right diet, lifestyle, and treatment.
Triggers differ. Common ones include very fatty or spicy meals, caffeine, alcohol, and, for some, certain fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs). A food and symptom diary helps find yours.
Not always. It is advised when there are warning signs, when you are in an age or risk group, or when symptoms do not fit IBS. Your doctor will explain.
Stress does not cause it on its own, but it can trigger and worsen symptoms. Managing stress and sleep often helps.
They help some people, but results vary with the product and the person. Ask your doctor.
Not without a reason. Some people truly need to, such as with coeliac disease or lactose intolerance. Testing first is better than guessing.
Go straight away for severe or worsening belly pain, a hard swollen belly with repeated vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding, vomiting blood, or signs of severe dehydration.
