HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks the immune system, particularly the CD4 cells that help the body fight infections. Left untreated for many years, it can lead to AIDS. But HIV and AIDS are not the same, and with proper treatment most people never reach that stage.
Modern treatment, antiretroviral therapy (ART), stops the virus from multiplying. Taken regularly, it can lower the viral load until tests cannot detect it. When it stays undetectable, the virus cannot be passed to a sexual partner: undetectable equals untransmittable (U=U).
“There is currently no cure for HIV, but it is a manageable long-term condition. People on effective treatment can work, study, have relationships, and raise families.”
Many people with HIV have no symptoms for years. Some notice a short, flu-like illness a few weeks after infection. Symptoms alone cannot tell you; only a test can.

A sore throat, mouth ulcers, and headache.
Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin.

If untreated: unexplained weight loss, night sweats, recurring fevers.
If untreated: thrush, shingles, chest infections, or tuberculosis.

There is currently no cure for HIV. But treatment with antiretroviral therapy can control the virus so well that people stay healthy and live long lives. Be cautious of anyone who claims to cure HIV, and never stop prescribed treatment.
Undetectable means the amount of virus in your blood is too low for standard tests to find. People who take ART as prescribed and keep an undetectable viral load do not pass HIV to sexual partners. Your doctor will tell you when your viral load has been undetectable for long enough.
It depends on the test. Modern tests can detect infection within a few weeks, but very recent exposure may not show up yet. Your doctor will advise on the right test and when to repeat it.
Contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately. PEP is a short course of medicines that can reduce the chance of infection, but it must be started as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours after exposure.
Doctors generally recommend starting ART soon after diagnosis, once baseline tests are done and you have had counselling. Your doctor will plan the timing with you.
Yes. With treatment, regular monitoring, and the right care during pregnancy, delivery, and after birth, the risk of passing HIV to the baby can be greatly reduced. Speak to your doctor early.
Yes. People on effective treatment can work, study, have relationships, and have families. Regular follow-up, taking medicines every day, and a healthy lifestyle make a big difference.
