Snoring is the sound made when air has trouble flowing freely through your nose and throat during sleep. As you fall asleep, the throat muscles relax, and soft tissues such as the soft palate and tongue can vibrate as air passes through a narrowed space.
Occasional snoring is very common and often harmless. But loud snoring on most nights can be a clue to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), where the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, breathing briefly stops, and sleep is broken even after a full night in bed.
“Not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea, and a person can have sleep apnoea without snoring loudly. That is why persistent snoring is worth having looked at, instead of trying one gadget after another.”
Snoring on its own can be simple snoring. These signs, especially in combination, suggest that something more may be going on.
Snoring on most nights, loud enough to disturb a partner or others at home.
A partner notices breathing stop, sometimes ending in a snort or gasp.
Waking up tired, even after seven or eight hours in bed.
Dozing off while sitting, reading, or watching television.
Headaches, a dry mouth, or a sore throat when you wake up.
Difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or feeling irritable through the day.
It is not possible to know why you snore from symptoms alone. Different causes can occur together, and each calls for different treatment.
A deviated septum, allergy, sinus problems, or polyps make nose breathing harder.
Enlarged tonsils or adenoids, a very common reason in children.
Extra tissue around the neck and throat can narrow the airway.
Sleeping flat on the back lets the tongue and soft palate fall backwards.
These relax the throat muscles more than usual, so snoring gets worse.
Irritates and swells the lining of the nose and throat.
A small jaw, long soft palate, or narrow airway, sometimes running in families.
Snoring may be a sign of OSA, which needs proper assessment.

Loud snoring with breathing pauses or daytime tiredness deserves a proper check.
Adults and children with regular snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, daytime tiredness, or a blocked nose at night can consult DR Care for a proper assessment.
Snoring that is loud, regular, or getting worse over time.
Breathing that stops in sleep, then restarts with a snort or gasp.
Unrefreshing sleep and dozing off despite a full night in bed.
A nose that blocks at night and pushes you to breathe through the mouth.
Regular snoring, mouth breathing, or restless sleep in children.
These make sleep apnoea more likely, so snoring is worth checking.
Feeling sleepy at the wheel is a safety risk that needs assessment.
Tried pillows, strips, and sprays without lasting relief.
No. Many people snore without any health problem, particularly after a cold, a heavy meal, alcohol, or a tiring day. But loud, regular snoring, especially with pauses in breathing or daytime tiredness, should be assessed.
Snoring is a sound caused by vibration in the airway. Sleep apnoea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly narrows or stops during sleep, disturbing sleep and affecting oxygen levels. Many people with sleep apnoea snore, but not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea. A sleep study can tell them apart.
This depends on your symptoms. Many people need only an examination of the nose and throat. If sleep apnoea is suspected, a sleep study is usually advised. Your doctor will tell you which tests make sense for you.
In some people, the cause, such as a nasal blockage or enlarged tonsils, can be treated, and snoring improves or stops. In others, it is managed rather than removed, for example with weight loss, positional changes, CPAP, or an oral appliance. Your doctor will give you a realistic picture after assessing you.
Some may help certain people with simple snoring, for example nasal strips when the nose is blocked. They do not treat sleep apnoea, and they should not delay a proper assessment if you have warning signs.
Most people are first treated without surgery. Surgery is usually considered when a clear anatomical cause is found, or when other treatments have not worked or are not suitable. Your doctor will discuss this with you if and when it becomes relevant.
For many people who are overweight, yes. Even a modest weight loss can reduce snoring and improve breathing during sleep. It is not a solution for everyone, as snoring also happens in people of normal weight.
Yes. Occasional snoring with a cold is common. But regular snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, pauses in breathing, bedwetting, or daytime behaviour or learning problems should be checked by a doctor, as enlarged tonsils or adenoids are a common and treatable cause.
