The prostate is a small gland just below the bladder in men, wrapped around the tube that carries urine out of the body. Because it surrounds the urinary passage, any change in its size or health can affect how you pass urine.
Doctors think about three main problems: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement common with age; prostatitis, inflammation or infection of the prostate; and prostate cancer, which often grows slowly and may cause no early symptoms. They can feel alike, and you cannot tell them apart from symptoms alone.
“Many men delay seeing a doctor out of embarrassment, or the belief that nothing can be done. In fact, most prostate problems can be assessed and managed well, and early assessment gives you more choices.”
Prostate problems often show up as urinary symptoms first. If any of these feel familiar, it may be time to speak with a doctor.
Needing to pass urine more often than before, during the day or night.
Getting up once or more at night, and finding it disturbs your sleep.
A stream that is weak, slow, or stops and starts.
Difficulty starting to urinate, or having to strain.
A sudden urge that is hard to hold, or a bladder that never feels empty.
Burning urine, or pain in the lower belly, groin, or lower back.
Different causes can look the same, so a prostate condition cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone. These are the main possibilities doctors consider.
The prostate grows with age and squeezes the urinary passage. It is not cancer.
A sudden prostate infection with fever, chills, and burning urine. Needs prompt care.
Lingering infection or long-standing pelvic pain, with recurring symptoms.
More common in older men and with family history. Often silent early on.
Infections, bladder stones, or an overactive bladder can feel similar.
Scarring in the urinary passage, usually after infection or injury.
Some decongestants and antihistamines, diabetes, and nerve conditions.
Evening fluids, caffeine, alcohol, long sitting, and constipation.
We understand your symptoms and how they affect your sleep and daily life, then explain your options plainly.

These are personal matters, and you will be heard without embarrassment or hurry.

Urinary changes are common, but often there is a reason, and often there is help.
Men with frequent urination, night-time trips to the toilet, a weak stream, burning, pelvic pain, or a high PSA report can consult DR Care in private.
Getting up again and again to pass urine.
A slow stream, straining, or dribbling.
Needing to go often, and finding it hard to hold.
Burning urine or urine infections that keep returning.
Persistent pain in the pelvis, groin, or lower back.
A PSA result that was flagged and needs explaining.
Or over 45 with a family history, wanting a prostate check.
Even once, this should be checked.
No. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement that is very common as men age. It can cause similar urinary symptoms to prostate cancer, but they are different conditions. Having BPH does not mean you will get cancer, though both can occur in the same man, so a proper check is worthwhile.
There is no single answer for everyone. Men with urinary symptoms can be assessed at any age. For screening without symptoms, many doctors suggest discussing PSA testing from around 50, or earlier at about 45 if there is a family history of prostate cancer. Your doctor will talk through the pros and cons with you.
Not necessarily. PSA can be raised by an enlarged prostate, infection, or recent activity such as cycling, and it can also be raised in cancer. A high result usually means more evaluation is needed, not a definite diagnosis.
Often, yes. Mild symptoms may only need lifestyle changes and monitoring. Medicines can help many men. Procedures or surgery are usually considered when medicines are not enough or when there are complications. Your doctor will guide you.
It can be due to an enlarged prostate, an overactive bladder, drinking a lot of fluid close to bedtime, caffeine or alcohol, diabetes, sleep problems, or other causes. A doctor can help work out which apply to you.
Acute bacterial prostatitis usually responds to a full course of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. Chronic forms can be harder to treat and may come back, and the aim is to control symptoms. Your doctor will explain what to expect in your case.
Evidence for most of them is limited or mixed. They should not replace a proper assessment, and some can interact with medicines. Speak to your doctor before using them.
Go straight away if you cannot pass urine and your lower belly is full and painful, if you have fever with chills and burning urine, heavy bleeding or clots in the urine, severe pelvic or back pain with vomiting, or confusion with urinary symptoms.
