The gut is the whole digestive tract, from the food pipe and stomach through the small and large intestines. It breaks down food, absorbs nutrients and water, and moves waste out of the body. It is also home to trillions of bacteria, the gut microbiome, which help with digestion and are linked with immunity.
Symptoms such as bloating, gas, pain, constipation, and loose stools can look alike, but the causes can be very different: a sensitive gut as in IBS, an infection, a food intolerance, coeliac disease, inflammation, or simply diet, stress, irregular meals, or a recent course of antibiotics.
“Occasional digestive upset is normal. Most gut problems can be understood and managed once the cause is identified, without cleanses, detox drinks, or cutting out whole food groups.”
Gut problems can show up in different ways. Keeping a short diary of what you eat and when symptoms appear gives your doctor very useful clues.
A feeling of fullness or a swollen belly, often worse by evening.
Gas, burping, or discomfort that keeps returning through the day.
Stomach pain or cramps, often eased or worsened by a bowel movement.
Hard stools, straining, or a feeling of incomplete emptying.
Watery stools, or a sudden urgent need to reach the toilet.
Nausea, acidity, or a burning feeling in the chest or upper belly.
It is not possible to know the cause of gut symptoms from the symptoms alone. These are the main possibilities doctors consider.
An oversensitive gut causing pain, bloating, and bowel changes, without visible damage.
Difficulty digesting foods such as lactose in milk, causing gas and loose stools.
An autoimmune reaction to gluten that damages the lining of the small intestine.
Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, with long-term inflammation of the gut.
Bacteria, viruses, and parasites causing diarrhoea, cramps, and bloating.
Upper gut problems, including H. pylori, causing burning, pain, and nausea.
Antibiotics, painkillers, iron tablets, and some other medicines can disturb the gut.
Irregular meals, low fibre, stress, and poor sleep, because the gut and brain are linked.
We look at how your symptoms relate to food, stress, and bowel habits, then choose tests and treatment that make sense for you.
When symptoms began, how they relate to food and stress, your stools, weight, and what you have tried.
We examine your abdomen and general condition, checking for tenderness, swelling, and pallor.
Blood, stool, or breath tests and ultrasound, with endoscopy only when it is needed.
Diet guidance, medicines, or cause-specific treatment, reviewed and adjusted over time.
We listen first, explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions, and your visit stays private.
What your symptoms and test results may mean, explained without heavy jargon.
Your age, diet, work routine, health conditions, and preferences shape the plan.
Which tests are worthwhile, and no restrictive diets or supplements you do not need.
Gut problems often need adjustment. If symptoms continue or change, we review the plan.
Book easily by call, WhatsApp, or the form on this page.
A clear, structured path from your first consultation to the care that is right for you.
Your symptoms, stools, diet, medicines, travel, and family history.

Blood in the stool, weight loss, or symptoms that wake you at night need prompt attention.
People with ongoing bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools, stomach pain, or acidity can consult DR Care for a proper gut evaluation and a clear plan.
A belly that feels swollen or full, day after day.
Hard stools or straining that will not settle.
Diarrhoea or urgency that keeps coming back.
Burning in the chest or upper belly, or nausea.
Pain, bloating, and bowel changes linked to food or stress.
Cutting out foods without knowing why they upset you.
Antacids or laxatives that have stopped working.
Repeated stomach pain, poor weight gain, or constipation.
Most gut symptoms are not dangerous. But blood in the stool, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, symptoms that wake you at night, or a lasting change in bowel habits after the age of 45 to 50 should be checked promptly. If you are unsure, it is better to have it looked at.
IBS is a common functional condition where the gut is oversensitive, but the bowel looks normal on tests. IBD, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, involves actual inflammation and damage to the gut lining and needs specific treatment. They can feel alike, so tests are sometimes needed to tell them apart.
No. Many people can be assessed and treated based on their history, examination, and simple tests. These procedures are usually advised when there are warning signs, when symptoms persist or do not respond to treatment, or based on age and family history. Your doctor will explain why one is or is not needed.
Probiotics may help in some situations, but the benefit depends on the condition and the specific product, and they do not work for everyone. It is best to ask your doctor whether they are likely to help in your case.
Not without a reason. Some people truly need to, for example with coeliac disease or lactose intolerance, but removing foods without testing can lead to nutritional gaps and can make a proper diagnosis harder. Speak to a doctor before making big dietary changes.
Yes. The gut and the brain are closely connected, and stress, anxiety, and poor sleep can trigger or worsen symptoms such as pain, bloating, and bowel changes. Managing stress, sleep, and routines often helps alongside medical care.
There is no reliable evidence that they improve gut health, and some can cause cramps, dehydration, or imbalance in body salts. A balanced diet with enough fibre and fluids, regular meals, and activity is a safer foundation.
Go straight away if you have severe or worsening belly pain, a hard swollen belly, vomiting blood, heavy rectal bleeding, high fever with diarrhoea, or signs of severe dehydration such as dizziness, very little urine, extreme weakness, or confusion.
