Inside your nose, a thin wall of bone and cartilage, the septum, divides the left and right sides. In many people it sits a little to one side. This is a deviated nasal septum (DNS), present from birth or caused by a knock to the nose, sometimes long forgotten.
A mild bend is extremely common and often causes no trouble. When the bend is significant, it narrows one side of the nose, affecting breathing, sleep, and comfort. It is often missed, with blockage put down to allergy or dust and treated with sprays for years.
“Not every deviated septum needs treatment, and not every blocked nose is caused by a deviated septum. An examination can tell you which applies to you.”
These symptoms can also come from allergy, infection, polyps, or swollen turbinates, and often more than one cause is present together.
Usually worse on one side, or alternating from side to side.
Noisy breathing at night, with a dry mouth or sore throat in the morning.
Repeated sinus trouble, or pressure in the face.
Nosebleeds that keep coming back, often from one side.
Around the forehead, cheeks, or the bridge of the nose.
A reduced sense of smell, or postnasal drip and throat clearing.
A deviated septum is only one reason for a blocked nose, and it often occurs alongside others. A proper assessment looks at the whole nose.
Many people are born with an uneven septum, or it grows unevenly.
A fall, sports injury, or childhood knock, sometimes years ago.
The nose changes shape over time, making a bend more noticeable.
Allergy swells the nasal lining, worsening the narrower side.
Normal structures that swell from allergy or long-term irritation.
Soft, non-cancerous growths that block the nose and reduce smell.
Long-standing sinus inflammation or infection.
Using sprays for too long can cause rebound swelling.
We find out how much the problem affects your daily life before deciding whether you need medicines, surgery, or neither.
Which side is blocked, how long, past injuries, sinus infections, nosebleeds, and sprays you use.
A thin camera shows the inside of your nose in a few minutes, and you can see your own images.
Allergy assessment, a CT scan, or a sleep assessment, only when they are useful.
Medicines first where possible, septoplasty when needed, and follow-up after.
We listen first, explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
You can see your endoscopy images, and we explain what they show.
Your symptoms, age, work, allergies, and priorities shape the plan.
If you can manage without it, we will tell you. If not, we explain why and the risks.
Before and after any procedure, you can come back and the plan can be reviewed.

A clear, structured path from your first consultation to the care that is right for you.
Which side, how long, and what you have tried.
A quick look inside with a thin camera.
Allergy assessment or CT, only when they help.
What your images show, in plain language.
To ease swelling; they help symptoms but cannot straighten the septum.
And stopping spray overuse with your doctor's guidance.
Done inside the nose: no outside cuts, and the nose shape does not change.
Clear aftercare advice, and checks on healing and breathing.
You do not have to live with a blocked nose. At DR Care, our ENT team is here to find the real cause and give you honest advice on what will help.

Sprays can ease symptoms, but they cannot straighten the septum. Find the real cause.
People with a nose that is always blocked on one side, snoring, repeated sinus infections, or nosebleeds can consult DR Care for an honest ENT opinion.
A nose that never seems to breathe properly.
Noisy nights and a dry mouth in the morning.
Sinus trouble that keeps coming back.
Often from the same side.
Needing decongestant drops to breathe.
Breathing has not been the same since.
Around the forehead, cheeks, or nose.
Advised surgery and want an honest view.
Medicines can reduce swelling and ease symptoms, and treating allergy often helps a great deal. But they cannot straighten the septum. If the blockage is mainly structural and bothersome, septoplasty is the only way to correct it.
The surgery is done under anaesthesia, so you will not feel it. Afterwards, most people describe pressure and blockage rather than severe pain, and it is managed with medicines.
No. Septoplasty is done inside the nose, so the outside shape does not change. If you also wish to correct the outer shape, a septorhinoplasty can be discussed.
Usually about 45 minutes to an hour, though it depends on whether other procedures are done together. Many people go home the same day or the next day, depending on the case and the facility.
Many people notice an improvement within the first couple of weeks, with the full benefit appearing over several weeks as the swelling settles. Recovery varies, so your surgeon will give you an idea for your own case.
Yes. A blocked nose can push you to breathe through your mouth, which often leads to snoring and poor sleep. If you snore heavily, stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very sleepy during the day, your doctor may also check for sleep apnoea.
It is uncommon for a significant bend to return, but it can happen, for example after another injury to the nose. Your surgeon will explain the chances in your case.
Go straight away if a nosebleed does not stop after 15 to 20 minutes of firm pressure, if your nose is swollen, bruised, and very painful after an injury, if clear fluid drips from the nose after a head injury, or if you have fever with swelling around the eye or any change in vision.
