The gall bladder is a small pouch tucked under the liver, on the upper right side of your belly. Its job is to store bile, a digestive fluid made by the liver, and release it into the intestine when you eat, especially when the meal has some fat in it.
Sometimes the substances in bile, mainly cholesterol and a pigment called bilirubin, clump together and harden into stones. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a lemon, and a person can have one or many.
Here is something that surprises many people. A large number of gall bladder stones cause no symptoms at all, and are only found by chance during a scan done for another reason. Stones like these often do not need treatment. Trouble starts when a stone blocks the flow of bile, causing pain, or when it leads to infection or inflammation.
So the real question is not only whether you have stones, but whether they are causing problems. That is something a doctor can help you work out.
When gall bladder stones cause symptoms, they tend to look like this:
Many people mistake this for gas or acidity, and treat it with antacids that do not help. If your “acidity” keeps coming back after meals, and especially if it is a sharp pain rather than a burn, it is worth getting checked.
The exact reason one person develops stones and another does not is not always clear. Several factors are known to raise the risk.
Having risk factors does not mean you will definitely get stones, and some people with none still develop them.
Most stones form when bile contains too much cholesterol, or when the gall bladder does not empty properly.
Women are more likely than men to develop gall bladder stones, and the risk rises with age.
Pregnancy and some hormone-based medicines can increase the risk.
Being overweight is a recognised risk factor.
Crash diets and very rapid weight loss can lead to stone formation. Losing weight gradually is safer.
Stones tend to run in families.
These can raise the risk.
Conditions that cause red blood cells to break down faster, or some liver diseases, can lead to pigment stones.
The gall bladder can become sluggish.
A few medicines can increase the risk, which is why your doctor will ask about everything you take.
It starts with a conversation. Your doctor will ask about the pain, when it comes, how long it lasts, whether it follows meals, whether there is nausea, vomiting, or fever, and what you have already tried. Your medical history, family history, medicines, and recent weight changes are useful too.
The doctor will then examine your abdomen, and check for tenderness and for yellowing of the eyes.
Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may suggest further tests, such as:
Which is the usual first test and is very good at showing gall bladder stones
Including a complete blood count and liver function tests, to check for infection or blockage
If inflammation of the pancreas is suspected
If stones in the bile duct or other problems are suspected
Not everyone needs every test. Your doctor will explain which ones are useful for you, and why.
It is natural to try a few home remedies or an antacid when your stomach hurts. And because the pain often settles by itself, it is easy to forget about it until the next episode. The trouble is that stones do not usually go away on their own, and a blocked or inflamed gall bladder can become serious quite quickly.
Pain in the upper belly can come from the gall bladder, stomach, pancreas, liver, or even the heart. A test can tell which one it is.
Stones that cause no symptoms are often just watched. Stones that cause repeated pain or complications usually need treatment.
Infection, a blocked bile duct, and pancreatitis are far easier to manage when found early.
If surgery is advised, you can understand why, what it involves, and what the alternatives are.
Some "stone-dissolving" drinks or flushes promise results they cannot deliver, and can sometimes cause harm.
Gall bladder stones can sometimes lead to serious complications, such as infection of the gall bladder, a stone blocking the bile duct, or inflammation of the pancreas. Go to the nearest emergency department straight away if you have any of the following:
Please do not wait at home with painkillers if you have these symptoms.
What we can promise is how we approach every visit. We listen first, we explain what we think is happening in language you can follow, and we only suggest tests and treatments that make sense for you.
You will not be hurried through your history or your questions.
We explain what your scan shows and whether the stones are likely to be causing your symptoms, without heavy medical jargon.
Your age, health conditions, symptoms, and preferences all shape the plan.
We will tell you plainly whether treatment is needed now, whether watching is reasonable, and what each option involves.
If symptoms continue or change after treatment, you can come back and the plan can be reviewed.
If you have had repeated pain after meals, or stones have already been found on a scan, a conversation with the right doctor can give you clarity. We will look at your symptoms and reports, explain what they mean, and help you decide what to do next, at a pace that suits you.

Care planned around your reports, at a pace that suits you.
Treatment depends on whether the stones are causing symptoms, whether there are complications, and your age and overall health. A plan may include some of the following.
Please avoid taking antibiotics or strong painkillers on your own for belly pain. They can mask serious problems and delay the right treatment. Results vary from person to person, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
For stones that are found by chance and cause no symptoms. Your doctor will tell you what to look out for.
Under medical guidance
Such as eating smaller, lower-fat meals, and avoiding crash diets. This can help ease symptoms but does not remove the stones.
Which is the usual treatment when stones cause repeated symptoms or complications. It is most often done by keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, though in some situations open surgery is needed. People can live normally without a gall bladder, though some notice looser stools or digestive changes for a while. Your doctor will explain the benefits and risks.
Such as ERCP, when stones have moved out of the gall bladder
If there is infection or inflammation, as decided by your doctor
Which are suitable only for a small group of people, work slowly, and stones can return. They are not a substitute for surgery in most cases, and should only be used if your doctor recommends them.
To check recovery and answer any questions
No. Stones that cause no symptoms are often left alone and monitored. Treatment is usually recommended when stones cause repeated pain or complications. Your doctor can help you decide, based on your situation.
Small stones may sometimes pass out of the gall bladder, but they can get stuck in the bile duct and cause serious problems. Medicines that dissolve stones work only in selected cases, take a long time, and the stones can come back. For most people with symptoms, removal of the gall bladder is the lasting solution.
Large, fatty, or fried meals can trigger pain in people who have symptomatic stones. Eating smaller, lighter meals often helps. Diet changes may ease symptoms, but they do not get rid of stones. Avoid crash diets, which can make stones more likely.
Removal of the gall bladder is one of the most commonly performed operations and is generally well tolerated. Like any surgery, it carries risks, which depend on your health and the situation. Your surgeon will explain these to you before you decide.
Yes. The liver continues to make bile, which flows directly to the intestine. Most people do well. Some notice looser stools or digestive changes, especially after fatty meals, and these often settle with time or simple diet changes.
Once the gall bladder is removed, stones cannot form there again. Rarely, stones can be present in the bile duct, or form in it later. Your doctor will explain what to watch for.
They can feel similar. Gall bladder pain is often sharper, builds up and lasts for a while, may spread to the back or right shoulder, and often follows a fatty meal. An ultrasound can show whether stones are present, and your doctor can tell you whether they explain your symptoms.
Go straight away if you have severe belly pain lasting more than a few hours, fever with chills, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine and pale stools, repeated vomiting, severe pain spreading to the back, or you feel dizzy, confused, or very unwell.
